Third Level Teachers Guidebook and Handbook

The Government’s National Strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence 2010-2014 attaches high importance to ensuring that understanding and recognition of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence are included in curricula in relevant third-level courses.  Last year Cosc surveyed relevant third level colleges across the country seeking information about the inclusion of domestic and sexual violence content in their curricula in the social science and medical courses that they offer.

As a result of the responses to the survey we found that material on domestic violence is included in the majority of courses across the country, in schools of nursing, social science, medicine and other faculties in the medical field.

To help them build on their work to date, Cosc has recently provided the colleges with model course material developed as a result of an international research project which was conceived with the express intention of producing high-quality resources for third-level course designers.

One of the key partners in this work was University College Dublin and it is a fitting tribute to Dr Mary Allen who led this work, for it to inform the education of those who will in future work in this area.

In terms of the materials themselves, the teacher’s guidelines focus on the lesson planning aspects of creating a module for a curriculum while the teacher’s handbook provides useful background information and references.
